San Miguel de Allende is the archetypal Mexican expat-retiree town: a perfectly preserved colonial center, a mild highland climate, and an arts-and-food scene sustained by decades of foreign residents. That popularity carries a premium — restored centro homes command some of the highest per-square-meter prices inland.

Where to live
Centro is the postcard — restored colonial houses steps from the Jardín, at the top of the price range. San Antonio and Guadiana are walkable near-centro favorites with strong expat demand. Los Frailes and the outskirts offer newer, larger homes and gardens for less, at the cost of needing a car.
Cost of living & climate
San Miguel is one of the priciest inland towns in Mexico per square meter, and the reason is simple supply-and-demand: the historic center is protected, so the stock of restored colonial homes is fixed while foreign demand keeps climbing. Centro carries a heavy premium; move to San Antonio, Guadiana or the outskirts and prices fall toward normal Bajío levels. The saving grace on running costs is the climate — a high-desert elevation (~1,900 m) gives warm days and cool nights year-round, so heating and cooling costs are minimal. Everyday living (markets, help, dining) is affordable; it's specifically prime real estate that's expensive.
